Tutti & Matmos With Jay Lesser

When I read for the first time
in some internet website about this concert I was thinking about a carter
tutti and matmos together show, like a special event because this people
are used to work with thousand of artists.
After I understand that was a separated show and I realize that this is
something that sometimes happen now in the concerts: the "famous"
artist or band open for the new ones.
Sometimes this thing is working, like in this case, and you didn't care
about it too much...sometimes is horrible like when echo and the bunnymen
were the special guests for the kaiser chiefs.
I know, it could be a problem of the band or of the organizations ...anyway
I am getting old so I am tired to wait hours and hours for a show, listening
boring music, thinking about the kms that I have to do for coming home..so
it's a mind-problem.
The concert starts a bit late, around 23.15 - Tuesday, because there was
the Euro 2008 match, so it's normal that before this kind of concert you
want to see some business football event.
Carter Tutti was in great mood, they made a really good show even if the
sound of the Festsaal was not very good, mosty with the basses.
The video that supported the show was a mix between handmade images and
some video manipulations; some of this were supporting the sound in an
excellent way other were a bit too photoshop for me. The songs were all
from the new Carter Tutti album, called "Feral vapours of the silver
ether", a work that seems really interesting because everything she/they
made is always particular and not very convenctional. Also I care more
about the works of the old people than the youngs...
After more than one hour of intensive music the Matmos show started, the
two plus Jay Lesser that also plays with different bands, maybe the most
famous is Rachel's.
Ah Matmos, everybody is talkng about this band, all the people love matmos,
the albums, the remixes and you can see this also for the people that
were in Berlin for the concert and maybe they thinked about a dance show
but they started with a very deep and very aggressive electro sound and
this was very funny, also for the faces of the people around me.
This was for the first 20 minutes of the show than I went home, because
I am not an artist, I don't live in Berlin and the day after I have to
work...

Um ehrlich zu sein, Matmos sagte mir vor diesem Gig nicht allzu viel.
Ein Blick auf die MySpace-Seite der Band ließ einen netten elektronisch-abstrakten
Sound erwarten und so freute ich mich auf diese Zugabe. Denn der eigentliche
Grund nach Berlin zu fahren waren selbstverständlich Carter Tutti,
auch wenn mich deren Internet-Sound nicht unbedingt vom Hocker riss.
Nachdem wir auf das Ende des Fussball-Spiels warten mussten, um endlich
die Bands sehen zu können, war es bereits nach elf als die Throbbing
Gristle-Musiker eröffneten. Chris Carter stand meist hinter seinem
Rechner und behielt die Geschehnisse auf dem Bildschirm im Auge. Gegelegentlich
schraubte er an einem Effektgerät herum. Cosey Fanni Tutty stand
im Zentrum der Bühne(nseite) und bearbeite vorrangig ihren Sechssaiter
mit verschiedenen "Effektgeräten", später spielte
sie auch Mundharmonika. Von Zeit zu Zeit schnappte sie sich das Mikrofon
und sang.
Der Sound muss insgesamt als eher ruhig bezeichnet werden, wenn auch etwas
druckvoller als die eher entrückten Hörbeispiele auf MySpace.
Basis aller Tracks waren interessante MidTempo-Rhythmen, die zum Mitwippen
einluden. Die schlechte Luft im Raum sorgte jedoch dafür, dass nicht
wenige Zuschauer gähnten oder wieder vor die Tür gingen. Ein
Sitzkonzert wäre wahrscheinlich passender gewesen. Das Video schaute
ich mir nur kurz an, da mich die Musiker mehr interessierten und ich (vergeblich)
versuchte ein paar schöne Bilder zu machen. Das war aber aufgrund
der extrem dunklen Bühne kaum möglich und den Künstlern
ständig ins Gesciht zu blitzen ist auch nicht meine Art.
Da es dann schon reichlich spät war, erlebten wir nur noch wenige
Minuten von Matmos, was aber auch nicht wirklich schlimm war. Wie gesagt,
der Sound war recht abstrakt und verspielt. Ganz nett aber nichts, was
meiner weiteren Beachtung bedarf.
